Samsung Galaxy S6, S6 Edge, S6 Edge+ and S6 Active won’t receive updates anymore

5 April 2018

The Galaxy S6 series smartphones brought a new design to the table. They made Samsung a household name once again after the poor sales of Galaxy S5. The same metal and glass design is still followed by Samsung. And it also inspired a whole lot other smartphone OEMs including Apple. But now, as the S6 series devices are three years old, Samsung discontinues the support for update.

Samsung’s update support page used to list the Galaxy S6 series devices which consist of Galaxy S6, S6 Edge, S6 Edge+ and S6 Active under the monthly security update section. But now, all the S6 devices have been removed from this section and they even don’t seem to found in the quarterly security update section too. This means they might even not receive the rumored Android Oreo update and the users will be stuck with the current security patch forever.

However, it’s not bad as every device will reach its end of support now or later. Samsung provided 3 years of security patches to these devices which is kind of great as most of the OEMs don’t support their devices for this long. Anyways, the custom ROM community is always there for those handful number of power users.

Do you think Android OEMs should provide more than 3 years of update support? Let us know in the comment section below.
